Yahoo! Messenger allows you to send instant messages. Instant messages are used to communicate with friends on the Internet. They are similar to email because they consist of text that you type back and forth. However, unlike email, you don't have to wait hours or days for an answer. As the name suggests, messages you send usually arrive instantly. Use Yahoo! Messenger to see when friends are online and chat back and forth with them, like having a real conversation.
You can only send an instant message (IM) to someone who has a Yahoo! ID and is using a version of Yahoo! Messenger.
Sending an IM to someone on your Friend List:
Double-click the ID on your Friend List to open an IM window.
Sending an IM to someone not on your Friend List:
Click the Message button located on the menu toolbar.
Type the Yahoo! ID of the person in the To: field.
Sending an IM to multiple friends:
Click the Message button located on the menu toolbar.
Type the Yahoo! IDs of the recipients in the To: field, separating the entries by commas.

Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard and click on all the Yahoo! IDs that you would like to send a message to.
Right-click on one of the selected IDs and choose Send a Message.
Sending an IM to an entire group:
Right-click on a group name and select Send Message to all in this group.
If you send an instant message to a friend that is offline (has a gray face next to their name), the IM will be stored in that friend's offline message box. They will be able to view your message the next time they are online.
